When Plan A Fails... @ Plan B, Paradigm Mall

June 7, 2013 - After a long lazy break, our tour continues in conjunction with the author's belated birthday celebration which falls on 5th of June. This time around, our tour brings you to "Plan B" restaurant at Paradigm Mall, Kelana Jaya. The name has attracted us for a long time before this and we always wanted to pay a visit to this restaurant and try out their variety of food and cakes available. Finally we are here. Well, I guess you'll know how busy city life is.

Our complete meal this round comes with a "Carbonara Pasta", "Morrocan Lamb Stew", "Ice Latte/Mocha" and a slice of "Red Velvet Cake" as dessert. "Plan B" offers a great variety of pasta such as Spicy Aglio Olio, Siciliana, Basil Pesto, Roasted Cherry Tomato Pomodoro, and the list goes on. I would say the food were superb and reasonably priced. Served with slices of ham and chunks of cheese, the carbonara was very thick but not too creamy either. Meanwhile, the lamb stew which served with garlic mash potatoes and chick peas in a rich tomato gravy was amazingly good. The meat was tender and delicious that I would say many big restaurant can't match with.

The ambiance of the restaurant is perfect for a full meal dining as well as for a relaxing coffee break. Apart from the food named above, "Plan B" also offers a variety of cakes/pastries, burgers/sandwiches and local delights such as nasi lemak, nasi dagang, laksa and so forth. Their coffee was fresh and brewed with specially picked coffee beans.  For those who go solely for the food, "Plan B" also offers "plain water" which comes in a unqiue lab bottle and the best thing is, it is F.O.C.

Our trip ended with a slice of fulfilling red velvet cake. Being a food lover but the eating capacity of a normal human being , we have spotted one of their attraction that we can only note it down in our "to-eat-list" , the "Golden Soft Shell Crab Pasta". Sometimes, it's good to always have a plan B in case your plan A fails, but now I think it's better to say, "Drop Plan A, Go Plan B".

Revisit

June 14, 2013 - Unable to forget the beauty of it when we had our first sight on the dish served to the next table last week, we're back again to satisfy our hunger and food crave. It was never a regret for the return as the "Golden Soft Shell Crab Pasta" was so yummy delicious. The spaghetti was served in a creamy and a little spicy butter sauce that comes with crispy fried soft shell crab that makes every bites melted in our saliva with full of satisfaction. While there is huge list of pasta offers by Plan B to go through, I can only say.... "We'll be back".

Oyster Mee Suah @ Fun Taipei Teacafe, SS2 Petaling Jaya

April 7, 2013 - This month, let our tour brings you to try one of the best "Oyster Mee Suah" in town. This little cafe located in heart of SS2 (opposite McDonald's) offers a wide range of authentic Taiwanese food (e.g., Braised Pork Rice, Taiwanese Sausage Rice, 3 Cup Chicken Rice, Beef Noodle, Oyster Mee Suah, etc.) locally without having you to travel the distance for a taste of Taiwan and most of the food here comes in a set whereby they are served with an different combination of side dishes (i.e., fried/braised tofu, braised egg, pickled vegetable, etc).
Of the many, what we like the most is their "Oyster Mee Suah". At the price of RM6.50++ (ala carte) or RM11.50++ (set), you get to enjoy a bowl of "Taiwanese Oyster Mee Suah" that will definitely keeps you coming back for it. Let me tell you why. In many other places, the gravy of the noodle could be a little too salty which covered the sweetness and freshness of the oyster taste. In Fun Taipei Teacafe, the gravy was neither too mild nor too salty and it blends very well with the top-placed chili paste and minced garlic. The oysters here are also served differently as they are deep fried instead of raw oyster which normally stirred with hot boiling gravy/soup. The crispy flour coating preserves the oyster taste from being too diluted into the gravy/soup and melts perfectly in the mouth.

Lastly, I must mention that the staffs (most of them seems to be taiwanese) were warm and friendly that makes every guest feel so comfortable and welcomed. If you're looking for great authentic Taiwanese food (especially oyster mee suah) in a nice and cozy enivornment that makes the best value for your money, Fun Taipei Teacafe is the answer!

SanBanTo (a.k.a. The Pork Place) @ IOI Boulevard, Puchong

March 31, 2013 - This round let our tour brings you to a yummy porky meal (non-halal) at SanBanTo (a.k.a. The Pork Place) located in the heart of Puchong. There are not many restaurant specializes in serving full-fledged pork meal and I can assure you that SanBanTou is one of them that you wouldn't want to miss out. Out of the varieties of pork selections, we have picked the "Pork Nachos", "Pigs In Blanket" (cocktail sausages with bacon strips) and "Pork Kanom Pang" (fried bread with minced pork spread) as our appetizers. Among the few,  I prefer "Pork Kanom Pang", which was served with Thai chili sauce. A light and yummy, porky appetizer that prepares you for the main course.

To try out both their Asian and Western style of porky meals, we have ordered the the "Meatball Napolitan" (Pasta), "Braised Pork Leg with Rice", "Pork Chop", and "Pork Burger".  I would say all the pork were fresh and juicy. The richness of the meat satisfy your mouth with a deep and yummy porky taste in every bite.
For first timer and if you're hesitating which one to go for, I would recommend their western style and I must say that, their meatball is one of the richest and best I've ever tried.
The ambiance of the restaurant is also fantastically cool for you to enjoy your pork meal. As depicted above, the brick walls are decorated with some art pieces of boar. Besides, they also have a wine bar at the back of restaurant for those who like to have a few sips while enjoy your porky meal. Not to forget, there is also a fresh meat store that is hygienically managed in a segmented area at the center of the restaurant. Fresh meat, bacon, ham, sausages, meatball and other pork products can be conveniently bought here. Being a far sighted food lover and planner, I have brought back their fresh "Jumbo Hot Dog". I guess that will make some magic turning my instant noodle supper from ordinary to luxury. Slurrp~

Unagi Kamameshi (a.k.a. "Unagi Iron Pot Rice") @ Watami Casual Restaurant, Paradigm Mall

3
March 16, 2013 - Unagi is always my favourite when it comes Japanese food and this round our tour proudly brings you another special dish called the "Unagi Kamameshi" at Watami Casual Restaurant located in Paradigm Mall, Kelana Jaya. "Unagi Kamameshi" basically means iron pot rice with eel. If you don't like unagi, this iron pot rice also comes in chicken & salmon (i.e., "Gomoku Kamameshi") and crab meat (i.e., "Kani Kamameshi"). The "Kamameshi" comes in a burning hot iron pot and cooked on the dining table. Hence, you have to be patiently wait for 20 minutes for the rice to be cooked right in front of you. The smell could be very tempting while the rice being cooked but do not try to open the lid or your "Kamameshi" may not be well-cooked. It definitely worth the 20 minutes wait for the fresh and yummy "Kamameshi". For those who like a little spicy, you will also be provided a bottle of pepper for the add-on. Slurrp~
Watami Casual Restaurant which originated from Singapore also serve a variety of food and desserts that values for your money. While the "Kamameshi" only cost RM24.90 - RM28.90 for ala-carte, Watami also offer a long list of set meal and combo. While there are too many of them for 1 go, we only manage to try their "Hotate Butter Yaki" @ RM18.90 (a.k.a . "Baked Scallop with Butter") and "Hokkai Shio Chanko Nabe" @ RM27.90 ("a.k.a. Hokkaido Sumo Wrestler Hot Pot") this round. The "Hotate Butter Yaki" which served with enoki mushroom was well baked with butter. With a bit of lemon squeeze as taste enhancer, it makes a perfect light appetizer while waiting for the "Kamameshi" to be cooked. For dessert, do check out their "Hot Chocolate Brownie" and a variety "Parfeit" in their menu. We're too full to try and show it here this round but I can guarantee that they will make an appeal. The environment, lighting and music in Watami also creates a perfect japanese dining ambiance that is ideal for loving couple to share a great dining time together.

Revisit

March 30, 2013 - We've made a return in the same month to try their irresistible dessert. Out of their premium dessert selection, we've picked the hot chocolate brownie. At the price of RM 14.90++, we've got ourselves 5 pieces of brownie cake with 2 small scoop of ice cream which are served with chocolate sauce in a separate jar. The brownies were perfectly moist and firm, and not too sweet either. We give their dessert a thumbs up!

The Gift Tilapia Restaurant @ Asia Cafe, Puchong

March 10, 2013 - For fish lover, our tour this round brings you to a cheap and yummy tilapia fish located in Asia Cafe, Puchong. One may be surprised to find such a great food restaurant operating in a small setup among the many food stalls in the middle of Asia Cafe Food Court. While their main branch is located in Seremban, this is probably their kick-start to mark their presence in Kuala Lumpur. Cultivated and grown in their own farm, Gift Tilapia's fishes are tranported fresh from Seremban daily. For the first try, we have ordered their signature "Grilled Tilapia with Soy Sauce", "Portugese Grilled Tilapia" and "Steam Tilapia". The claims were indeed very true as the fishes were fresh and tasty. Most importantly, the tilapia fishes do not give a muddy taste. In temperature control and timing, Gift Tilapia has mastered the skill perfectly as the fishes were not being over/undercooked. For "sambal" lover, the sauce used in their portugese grill was also tasted great that you may finish your rice just with it alone.

Price from only RM15-17,  the fishes are indeed value for the money as they are fresh, tasty and reasonably big. Apart from their premium tilapia fish, Gift Tilapia restaurant also serve tiger prawn, tofu and several vegetables dishes. Yes, the prawns are also fresh. Try it someday~

Charcoal Burger @ myBurgerLab, Seapark

March 8, 2013 - This round, our food tour brings you for a juicy and yummy burger session at myBurgerLab located in Seapark, Petaling Jaya. It's not difficult to find the shop as it's the only in the row that is crowded by people. According to some sources, myBurgerLab was  started by a group of young oversea graduates who aspired to deliver a high quality juicy burger to fellow Malaysians.

While the price is slightly higher compare to other fast food restaurant and burger shops, myBurgerLab is indeed unique and oustand many other burgers in town. On top of their own baked charcoal bun (which made it black), the paties are made from 100% grass fed Australian beef. We're also amazed by the varieties in the menu, each with their own cool and creative names such as "Say Cheese", "Beautiful Mess" , "A+", "Hangover" and  "Kick In The Face". Without hesitating further, I walked straight to the counter and asked their crew which one is their signature and I was recommended the "Beautiful Mess" and "A+" burger with a choice of chicken or beef. Can't wait to try them all, we have took the "Beef Beautiful Mess", "Beef A+" and "Chicken A+". The price ranged from RM11-18 and with a top-up of RM6, you can make it a set that comes with crispy fries and a free-refill bottomless soft drink. With the melted cheese on the thick and juicy beef/chicken paties served with sunny side up, fried portabella mushroom and freshly baked charcoal bun, every bite was indeed satisfying and mouth watering.

As myBurgerLab only operates from Tuesday - Sunday, 5 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. , make sure you be there early to secure your seat if you opt to dine-in. You may see BurgerLab's fans already started queing even before their door opens. Nevertheless, BurgerLab's managed its queue and burger production in a systematic and effiecient way that you don't have to worry about the wait. What impressed me the most, BurgerLab doesn't only focus on selling their burgers but making a great effort in customer relationship management and quality assurance. Don't get the wrong message if one their sweet looking crew asked for your name as it will be printed on your your receipt/queue number building a better rapport with their customer. At the collection counter, you'll also see one of their crew leader busy performing a QC check, making sure every burger achieved myBurgerLab standard before it is handed over to their customer. I will definitely return again to get a "Kick In the Face" or  perhaps "Vivien's Husband" next round.

NBrew Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream @ eCurve, Mutiara Damansara

February 16, 2013 (Part III) - It's dessert time! This round we're proud to be among the first to try out the liquid nitrogen ice-cream brought into Malaysia by NBrew. We're told that NBrew has only started their operation early this year at the street market in e@Curve and the response was incredibly good. Witnessed with our own eyes, a few tanks of liquid nitrogen were used in combination with some mixture to produce the ice-cream and yoghurt.
At only RM9, one can get two scoops of NBrew liquid nitrogen ice cream with a great option of available toppings. You will also get a discount of RM1 if you "like" their Facebook page during this promotional period. For this visit, we have picked the "Mango Yoghurt" and "Natural Yoghurt" with cornflakes as the topping. While NBrew claims that no preservative and stabilizer were used, the freshly made yoghurt has to be consumed immediately. The yoghurt was amazingly smooth and scrumptious. This is the beauty of technology when it applied to food I guess. It did not waste our efforts searching around to look for NBrew's kiosk which has recently relocated to ground level of e@Curve. The operator has also informed us that they will relocate again very soon to a bigger space within the same building. Hopefully, this round NBrew can have their guests seated while enjoying a cup of freshly made and super smooth nitro-ice cream.

Golden Pan Mee @ Golden Egg Noodle House, Bandar Puchong Jaya

February 16, 2013 (Part I) - Our tour begins with a simple and yet delicious bowl of flat flour noodle (a.k.a. "Pan Mee"). The uniqueness of this noodle shop in Bandar Puchong Jaya is that they evolute the traditional pan mee (which made of flour and egg) by flavoring them with pumpkin, chili, coriander or seaweed (with extra charge of RM0.50). Hence, for a bowl of "Pan Mee", one can opt for the original or one of the fore-mentioned flavors.

Besides, the noodle also comes in 3 different type (i.e., think, thick and traditional) and multiple cooking styles which makes the traditional pan mee more customizable and fits into different individual requirements. For instances, one can have "Soup Pan Mee", "Dried Pan Mee", "Loh Pan Mee", "Laksa Pan Mee", "Chili Pan Mee", "Kam Heong Fried Pan Mee", "Black Pepper Fried Pan Mee","Hokkien Fried Pan Mee", "Seafood Pan Mee", "Fish Slice Pan Mee" and the list goes on. Golden Noodle House also serve other delicacies such as fish head noodle, yee mee, claypot rice and variety of desserts that were priced reasonably.

For the purpose of this tour, we have ordered their signature "Soup Golden Pan Mee" (Pumpkin Flavor) in traditional style (hand-torn). As shown in the picture, "Golden Pan Mee" looks more yellowish than normal pan mee as pumpkin was blended into the dough mixture of the noodle. While pumpkin itself does not has a very strong taste, a good taster can probably find the difference. The thickness of the noodle was perfect as it was neither too thick nor too thin. The smooth texture of the noodle has also shown that the operator of this shop is a very experienced noodle maker. The soup was not too salty like some other "Pan Mee" shop as well. Overall, this innovative and customizable bowl of "Pan Mee" was simple but indeed satisfying.

Hobahn Korean Restaurant @ The Waterfront, Desa ParkCity

February 16, 2013 (Part II) - Our food hunting tour continued in the evening with a fulfilling Korean food dinner at Hobahn Korean Restaurant located in The Waterfront, Desa ParkCity. Among so many Korean dishes, the "KimChi Soup" (spicy Korean stew made with kimchi, pork and tofu) and "Beef Bulgogi" (stir fried marinated beef) are always our top pick. While Hobahn offers a variety of  reasonably priced set meals, we have ordered the "Sobulgogi Tchigae Set" (RM32++) that comes perfectly with both the "KimChi Soup" and "Beef Bulgogi".
On top of that, we have also tried their Korean Seafood Kimchi Pan Cake (a.k.a. Haemul Kimchi Jeon). which costs only RM16++. While some other Korean restaurants may under/over fried the pancake making it too soft or burnt, Hobahn deliver the best piece of Korean pancake we ever tasted so far. Being crispy on the outer layer, the softness in the inner layer is well maintained. Hobahn is also very generous in its ingredient making every bite of the pancake filled with aromatic seafood (i.e., octopus) flavor.

Due to its strategic location, right in the heart of The Waterfront, Desa ParkCity, one can have a walk in the park, enjoying a beautiful lake view, before of after dining. Around 5-7 p.m., one may also find a wide range of dog breed in park, joggers and other activities such as kite-flying. We can assure you that both "The Waterfront" and "Hobahn Korean Restaurant" will worth your visit and it's a perfect place for families and couples.

Arnor Crepe @ Asian Avenue, Sunway Pyramid

February 1, 2013 (Part II) - As usual, our food tour ends with a mouth watering dessert. This round, we've visited the Arnor Crepe located in Asian Avenue, Sunway Pyramid. Crepe is a traditional french snack food which has today, evolved into wide range of toppings, flavors and appearances. Arnor Crepe originated from Taiwan has recently expanded to Malaysia's and deployed their first flagship at Sunway Pyramid shopping mall.

Ranging from RM2.50 to RM12.90, Arnor offers a variety of giant crepe such as the "Jam Series", "Custard Series", "Sundae Series", and "Fruit Series". To take it as a main course or light meal, Arnor's "Meal Series" also provide multiple selection of meat and vegetable topping such as Seafood Senstation (crab meat, smoked chicken, tuna), Japanese Chicken Sensation (chicken, crab meat, katsuobushi), and Marine Sensation (chicken, chicken ham, crab meat, tuna, smoke chicken).

For the purpose of dessert in this visit, we have picked the "Japanese Green Tea Lychee Sundae". A combination of refreshing lychee with japanese green tea ice-cream on a crunchy crepe biscuit is simply irresistible to anyone especially in Malaysia's hot weather. Apart from the crepe, Arnor does also offer a great options of milk tea and yoghurt drinks too. Try it yourself someday~

XO Claypot Fish Head Noodle @ Goon Wah Restaurant, Jalan Kuchai Lama

February 1, 2013 (Part I) - It's "Federal Territory Day", a state holiday for Federal Territory Malaysia and we have decided to visit to the famous XO Fish Head Noodle at Jalan Kuchai Lama. The date selection to visit this restaurant is very important as they are closed on weekends. "Goon Wah" only operates from 9.30 a.m to 3.30 p.m on weekdays but they do open on public holiday. So, for those who work far from this area, public holiday is your only choice for the visit.

We've ordered their must-to-try signature Fish Head Noodle and  Claypot Loh Shue Fun. Priced at RM 13 and RM 9 respectively for small, the noodle comes in a reasonably big portion that is enough to be shared among 3 if you're not a big eater. The Fish Head Noodle served in a traditional claypot and you can choose between thick or thin beehoon noodle (a.ka. rice vermicelli). The fish was fresh and not bony like some restaurant serve and i do like the taro slice they put in the hot soup which made the milky soup more starchy. If you're ordering the thin beehoon noodle, the soup may get easily absorbed and dried off but not to worry, you may ask them to refill your soup.

Those who prefer dried noodle instead of soupy one, Claypot Loh Shue Fun is something you shouldn't miss. Burning under the hot fire, the Loh Shue Fun served with  minced meat, dried shrimp, sesame and lard. You should immediately stir it when the hot pot is served, so that the sauce and the ingredient is evenly mixed under the hot fire. The "Loh Shue Fun" not only tasted great but adequately dry and not overly oily.

Beside noodles, Goon Wah also serve a wide range of signature dishes that one can eat with or without rice such as the "Braised Pork Belly with Yam" (served with steamed bun), "Stir Fried Pork Stomach with Intestines", "BBQ chicken wings", etc. Trust me, it definitely worth planning your publlic holiday to pay them a visit.

Mille Crepe Cake @ Food Foundry, Happy Mansion, SS17 Petaling Jaya

January 20, 2013 (Part II) - Following the colorful "Xiao Loong Bao", we continued our tour to visit Food Foundry at Happy Mansion, Petaling Jaya for its famous Mille Crepe Cake. There are not many shops that specialize in this type of cake and "Food Foundry" could be one of the best in Klang Valley.

Upon arriving, we went straight to the fridge and take a glimpse of the all available flavors. Price from RM9-RM11, there are at least 7 or more visible flavors of mile crepe cake  in the display. We just can't make up our mind which one to pick as all the cakes looked so tempting. We wished to take a bite of each and every of them but they are too many of them for one go. We have finally ordered the original "Vanilla" and "Earl Grey Lavender". As "Earl Grey Lavender" was sold out on that particular day, we've replaced our order with the "Pink Rose Coconut".

The control of storage temperature perfectly cater for the cake and that's one of the reason one should dine there instead of taking away. You should also smell the fragrance from the cake before melting it in your tastebud just like smelling your coffee right before your sip. At the right level of sweetness, the cake pampered the tastebud gently with vanilla/rose coconut flavor and went smoothly through the eating tract. Comparing the both, we prefer the original "Vanilla" as santan on the "Pink Rose Coconut" could give a slightly different texture that contradicts with the smoothness of the cake.

We will definitely return again to this shop and try out all other available flavors. Until then, original "Vanilla" remains our top pick. "Earl Grey Lavender", don't worry, we'll come back for you.

Color Your Life With "Xiao Loong Bao" @ Paradise Dynasty, Paradigm Mall

January 20, 2013 (Part I) - Well, we have survived 2012. So, what now? We've decided to indulge ourselves with more delicacies in the coming 50 years (if we live that long...). Paradise Dynasty located in Paradigm Mall, Kelana Jaya became the 2nd destination in our 1/2 century food tour.

The main attraction of this Singapore-born restaurant is their colorful "Xiao Loong Bao". Priced at only RM23.80++, one will get a basket with 8 "Xiao Loong Bao" (a.k.a. steamed pork dumpling) that comes in different colors and flavors. The color and presentation made the "Xiao Loong Bao" less boring than the traditional pure white (with only 1 flavor) and it definitely whets one's appetite. Below are a brief description of the color varities and their flavors. Anyhow, I would advise one to taste it without knowing the flavors and make a wild guess before revealing what's the filling is. This will definitely add a little more fun to the eating. "Life is like a box of chocolate"...isn't it?

White - Original
Black - Black Truffle
Grey - Garlic
Brown - Foie Gras
Orange - Crab Roe
Yellow - Cheese
Green - Ginseng
Pink - SzeChuan

Apart from its famous "Xiao Loong Bao", Paradise Dynasty also serve a wide range of "La-Mian" (a.k.a. chinese hand pulled noodle). As we couldn't finish so much in food one-go, I have include the pictures of some "La Mian" (i.e., La Mian with sliced pork and pork broth soup & "SzeChuan" La Mian with pork dumpling) in my previous visits. If one prefer spicy with a little excitement on your tastebud, I would highly recommend the "SzeChuan" La Mian.

In this visit, we have also ordered the "DIY - Crepe" which served with sauteed shredded pork and leek as we're not looking for something too filling such as noodles and rice. The DIY part in wrapping the shredded pork and leek allows one to enjoy this Hunan dish in a slow and relaxing pace.

The food were perfectly complemented with a cup of free refill chinese tea. A must to mention is the unique interior design of the restaurant with Buddha statue and a river just at the heart of the restaurant. The combination with calm and peaceful traditional music separate our mind from the hustle bustle city life. Well, I've forgot to take a picture on that but not to worry as I will update this blog in my next visit and I'm very sure that will happen very soon. Meanwhile, use your imagination or pay a visit yourself.
